February is Dog Training Education Month

February is Dog Training Education Month

This is the perfect time to think about simple ways training can improve life for both you and your pet.

Why?

  •  Dog Training Education Month is important as it reminds us to never stop learning. Training your pet and educating yourself will create a more rewarding relationship for both of you.

Facts:

  • An untrained pet starts with the pet parent.

  • Dogs descended from wolves and more than half of their DNA is still wolf. Every dog needs to have an alpha.  This makes it crucial for you to learn to be the pack leader of your dog.

  • Different breeds are easier to train than others, so keep this in mind when starting a new training session.

  • Ideally - training starts as a puppy.

  •  It is never too late to teach an old dog new tricks.  Even older dogs can benefit from training. They enjoy finding new ways to please their owners.

  • Behaviour issues with a pet are not always their fault. Pets only want to please their owners.  They need to be taught the proper behaviours similar to small children.

  • Bring your patience and understanding.

Dog Training Programs:

  • A certified dog trainer will teach dogs of all ages how to behave and play nicely with other animals.

  • Some Humane Societies or shelters offer affordable help in training a pet.

  • Read reputable blog posts, listen to webinars or videos, or ask friends with well-behaved dogs.

  • Once basic training is complete, then other types of training such as agility training may also be taught.

Learn about dog body language:

  • Dogs may not be able to talk, but they can tell you how they feel.  The position of their tail, posture, and facial expressions are all signs of their intentions.

“Pawsitive” Reinforcement:

  • Instead of yelling at your dog when they do something wrong, offer a healthy dog treat when they do something right!  This action will quickly teach the dog the benefits of listening.

Obedience Training will help to build a lasting bond and you will be rewarded with a happy, well-trained dog.  So jump in and participate in Dog Training Month. You may both enjoy it!
