It may be a fire, flood, tornado, snow storm or pandemic...
Here are some simple steps you can take to ensure you are prepared before disaster strikes:
Information:
Ensure your pet wears a collar and ID tags that includes up-to-date contact information and any critical health information.
Get a Rescue Alert Sticker - this will let first responders know that pets are inside your home. Place the sticker near your front door advising the number and type of pets inside your home. You might want to include the name and number of your veterinarian too.
Alternate Home for your Pet:
Choose a safe place in advance where you and your pets can go if you need to evacuate your home.
Check with your local animal shelter, boarding facility or pet friendly hotels/motels in the area to find a suitable shelter that could be used.
Caregiver:
Decide in advance who will look after your pet if you are sick or hospitalized during an emergency.
Pet Disaster Kit:
Pet owners should have their pet carrier at the ready. It should be stocked with an extra leash, water bowls, 7 - 10 days of food, medications, medical records in a waterproof container and first-aid supplies.
Remember to include comfort items as well such as familiar toys, or a blanket.
Most importantly, never leave your pet behind. If your home is unsafe for you, it is unsafe for your pet.
A pre-determined plan in case of a disaster will help you remain calm and think clearly. It will also ensure your family and pets are protected and safe.
Remember your ability to care for your pet during a time of emergency will depend on how well you have prepared for it. Take the time to create a Pet Emergency Survival Kit; it may just very well save your pet’s life one day.
